100 Days of Kindergarten

We had so much fun this morning celebrating the 100 Days of Kindergarten. Below are some photos. A BIG thank you to the parents who sent in food and some items for '100'.

The countdown is nearly over!!!!

Don't forget our 100th Day celebration on Monday! Please RSVP by tomorrow!

Year 6 Storytime

Thank you to two beautiful Year 6 girls for visiting our room this morning to read us a book. So sweet.

Adding

This week we have been working on adding. We have paid particular attention to using the ten frame, which will help us when adding larger numbers. We have also been focusing on 'counting on'. This means when you have 5 objects and I ask to add 2, students count on from 5 for example 6,7.
We sing songs in Kindergarten to help us learn different concepts using all our senses.

Kindergarten are AMAZING

In Kindergarten we have been hard at work learning our letter names and sounds. We also practice our handwriting formation. Below are a few videos for your viewing. Enjoy!

100th Day in Kindergarten

Next Monday is the 100th Day in Kindergarten!
We have been counting down the days since the beginning of the year and it's finally here. You should of received an invitation in your child's bag.
If you would like to attend please come to the Kindergarten room at 10:15am on Monday.

Your child needs to PREPARE something to do with 100. There are lots of creative ideas on Pinterest if you get stuck. Some of the following could be helpful:
- Write 100 words on a page
- Draw 100 objects
- Collect 100 leaves or other small items (in a sealed bag)

Some very excited children suggested today, that they could bring in 100 toys. That is fantastic that they have that many toys, but if we could please refrain from any large or bulky items that would be much appreciated.

If you would like to send in something for morning tea, please do so when you drop your child to school on Monday, so we can prepare the classroom before you arrive. Please don't feel any pressure to do so, it's just if you would like to.

We look forward to seeing you in Kindergarten on Monday!

THRASSING out the Days of the Week

Kindergarten and Year 1/2 this week have been 'thrassing out' the days of the week each morning.

The blue letters are the consonants and the red are vowels. Students sound out the phonemes (sounds) using their fingers and clap the syllables. Students know how many syllables are in a word by counting how many times they 'jump' to the vowel chart, for example in the word Monday, the 'o' that makes the o as in glove sound and the 'ay' as in tray means we have 'jumped' twice to the vowel chart. Monday has 2 syllables.
It is important to count how many times you 'jump' to the vowel chart instead of looking at the 'vowel' letters as this can trick you. I know I was taught a different way and it was tricky. The THRASS approach makes it very simple for students to know how many syllables are in a word.

Handwriting

What do you do when it's freezing outside? HANDWRITING of course!

Today Kindergarten and Year 1/2 completed their THRASS overwrite chart handwriting sequence. Students listen to a set of instructions to help them form their letters correctly. This is essential in the writing process, so students can read their writing (and others). Once students, are able to form their letters correctly, it makes the process or reading and writing much easier.

Students LISTEN to the instructions, they TRACE the letters, they SAY the instruction for each letter for example 'a' 'down, around, up, down'. Students are using most of their senses to complete handwriting.

Weekly Organisation Term 3 Week 1

Welcome back to Term 3! It is already half way through the year already!

This term we have a lot of events and things happening. Outside the classroom, we have the St John's Musical. Kindergarten will be playing a key role in this and you'll hear more about this in the coming weeks.
We have Book Week, Science Week, Gymnastics each fortnight, St John's social, Grandparents Day, Spring Fair and throw in the regular sport commitments and learning time it makes for a very busy term. Children love being kept busy and stimulated to I'm sure they won't be complaining of being bored!

To begin the term, Parent/Teacher Interviews will commence next week. A note will go home tomorrow. Could you please fill this out with your top three preferred times. Please fill in all three so I am able to accommodate to your needs as best as possible.

I hope you enjoyed spending time looking through your child's portfolio and report. Please come with any questions next week and if possible please being the portfolio along also.

During the holidays (yes I worked in the holidays) Mrs Packer and I attended the THRASS advanced/mastery course. This course was amazing and a great step up from the last course we attended. We learned a great deal more about the approach to teaching phonemic awareness and have lots of exciting activities and lessons planned for the students this term.

Mrs Packer and I are hoping you would like to attend a 'crash course' in THRASS to know a bit more about the program. This would be very beneficial to help your child at home and so you know what is happening in the classroom. For those who have already attended an information session on THRASS the 'crash course' will be formatted differently and we encourage you to come. Please email me if you would like to attend and we will organise a date.

This term for homework, students will still take home their readers as usual. Instead of sight words, I would like students to use their 'Super Pack' (sent home at the beginning of the year) and work on segmenting their THRASS cards. Segmenting is a key element in decoding words and helping your child to read. For example for the word cat, students should use their phoneme fist and put up one finger for each sound they hear C-A-T. I will add a video to the blog this week of an example we will be doing in the classroom. Another area that students need to really focus on, which I will discuss in the parent/teacher interview is handwriting. Forming letters correctly is essential in the writing process. Some may not think it is important but it is essential for students to be literate. I will be sending home an 'overwrite chart' similar to what students use in class, for them to practice at home. Please don't practice using lined paper. Let your child practice their letter writing on plain paper so they are focusing on the correct formation rather than staying inside the lines. Writing inside the lines will be a skill they master later.

As always if you have any questions or would like to speak with me about anything please feel free to email me or pop in one afternoon.

Have a lovely warm evening and see you tomorrow!

Jess
