Wellbeing

Taj the Slug

Today in Wellbeing we introduced Taj from a book. He is a slug.
Students were asked to write on a coloured post it note and were asked the following:
Yellow: what is the same?
Blue: what is different?
Pink: would you be his friend? Why? Why not?

We stuck them on the board and discussed students answers. There were some great discussion points about why we should be friends with some people, even if they are a little different to us.

Reading Eggs/Mathletics and Readers

Let's get excited about the Holidays.......

The Holidays are fast approaching. Wednesday next week, is the last school day for the term.

While you are on holidays with your child, please utilise the SUPER PACK I provided to you a couple of weeks ago and Reading Eggs and Mathletics. Below are a few activities you could do with your child, if they are looking for something to do.

SIGHT WORDS: Practice the sight words. Simply present the sight word to the student and ask them to read it. Remember, in order for them to show they know the word, they should be able to read it within 3 seconds. If your child is unsure of a word, some of the following activities may help.

- Write the sight word for them. Ask your child to copy it underneath, saying the letter name as they are writing it. Then ask them to cover it with their hand and write it again. If your child writes it incorrectly start the process again. After they have correctly written the word, ask them to put it in a sentence.

- Make sight words using magnetic letters, play dough or even in sand.

- Place the cards in their room or somewhere they can see them.

THRASS: Students should practice the thrass 'rap' for both charts. Other activities include:

- Sequence the cards without the child using the chart for assistance.
- Practice the sounds for each box. If you are unsure, check previous blog posts for help.
-Ask your child to watch the video of the THRASS chart on the blog and practice doing the sequence in time with it.

SUPER PACK

By now you should of all received your SUPER PACK.
Inside the super pack are lots of resources you can use as a learning tool that relates directly to what we are doing in the classroom.
I will be adding some videos to the blog tomorrow that will help you at home including the THRASS rap.

SIGHT WORDS
Each week practice your child's sight words. Only focus on the 5 words for the particular week otherwise it will become to confusing and overwhelming.
If you think your child knows the sight words, extend activities to writing the words, looking for the words in favourite picture books and saying the words in a sentence.

How will you know your child knows a word?
When you show your child a word they should be able to read and acknowledge the word within three seconds. If it takes your child any longer they need more practice.

How can you help your child learn the sight words?
Each week your child will have 5 sight words to learn.
- Simple activities include simply showing your child the words and reading them.
- Put the words in context or in a sentence for example 'that', "Put 'that' piece of bread in the toaster".
- Stick the words (at child height) around the living area/kitchen and call out a word for them to find. This is a fun and interactive way to locate words. We also play a similar game in the classroom.
- Making the sight words with magnetic letters on the fridge. To make this more challenging, time your child and see if they can beat their time.

THRASS CARDS AND CHART
- Sequence the thrass cards in the correct order. Try and get your child to do this by memory instead of looking at the chart.
- Make words using the thrass cards e.g. Cat is 'C' as in cat, 'A' as in ant, 'T' as in tap.
- Practice both the phoneme (sound) and the grapheme (picture/spelling choice) rap. It should become fluent and from memory so practice everyday is VERY important.

More information will be added to the blog soon.

Please comment below if you have any feedback or questions :)

'K' as in Kite

Students are learning about the sound 'C'. 'C' sound can be represented by the letters 'K' as in kitten, 'ck' as in duck, 'ch' as in school, 'q' as in queen.
Students made kites this morning to represent this sound
