Kindergarten and Year 1/2 this week have been 'thrassing out' the days of the week each morning.
The blue letters are the consonants and the red are vowels. Students sound out the phonemes (sounds) using their fingers and clap the syllables. Students know how many syllables are in a word by counting how many times they 'jump' to the vowel chart, for example in the word Monday, the 'o' that makes the o as in glove sound and the 'ay' as in tray means we have 'jumped' twice to the vowel chart. Monday has 2 syllables.
It is important to count how many times you 'jump' to the vowel chart instead of looking at the 'vowel' letters as this can trick you. I know I was taught a different way and it was tricky. The THRASS approach makes it very simple for students to know how many syllables are in a word.
