By now you should of all received your SUPER PACK.
Inside the super pack are lots of resources you can use as a learning tool that relates directly to what we are doing in the classroom.
I will be adding some videos to the blog tomorrow that will help you at home including the THRASS rap.
SIGHT WORDS
Each week practice your child's sight words. Only focus on the 5 words for the particular week otherwise it will become to confusing and overwhelming.
If you think your child knows the sight words, extend activities to writing the words, looking for the words in favourite picture books and saying the words in a sentence.
How will you know your child knows a word?
When you show your child a word they should be able to read and acknowledge the word within three seconds. If it takes your child any longer they need more practice.
How can you help your child learn the sight words?
Each week your child will have 5 sight words to learn.
- Simple activities include simply showing your child the words and reading them.
- Put the words in context or in a sentence for example 'that', "Put 'that' piece of bread in the toaster".
- Stick the words (at child height) around the living area/kitchen and call out a word for them to find. This is a fun and interactive way to locate words. We also play a similar game in the classroom.
- Making the sight words with magnetic letters on the fridge. To make this more challenging, time your child and see if they can beat their time.
THRASS CARDS AND CHART
- Sequence the thrass cards in the correct order. Try and get your child to do this by memory instead of looking at the chart.
- Make words using the thrass cards e.g. Cat is 'C' as in cat, 'A' as in ant, 'T' as in tap.
- Practice both the phoneme (sound) and the grapheme (picture/spelling choice) rap. It should become fluent and from memory so practice everyday is VERY important.
More information will be added to the blog soon.
